ARTIST WORKSHOPS

BATIK ART WORKSHOP

We are super honoured to have the incredible Sujak Rahman with us!

Sujak Rahman is devoted to developing the visual language and relevance of batik through his paintings, concerned that the language and methodology of batik art should continue as a contemporary artistic medium. Sujak’s work, which he calls Temasek batik, stands as an important connector between traditional craft and modern experimentation in Southeast Asia. Since 1976, Sujak has held eight solos in Singapore and Japan, with the latest in Singapore in 2020. His works have been exhibited in Japan, Moscow, the Philippines, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. He has represented Singapore at art fairs in Japan, Hong Kong and Korea, and has won many art awards throughout his illustrious career as an artist.

“When I am doing batik, it is like a meditation for me. I feel that my soul is within the materials used, especially when I am using wax to draw. To me, lighting a candle is like a prayer. There is a Malay proverb – you are like a candle, you burn yourself to light up for others – ‘seperti lilin membakar diri untuk menerangi orang lain’. I think of wax as the material for candles. When I am waxing, I am still. My concentration is totally on that space which I am creating. While I am waxing, I may be deciding on the colours and the depth of the colour to be created. The cracks created are a part of my artwork, it connects to the subject of the painting itself, as well as my painting experience. I want someone to look at these paintings and read it for themselves. For me that is more abstract and the meaning of the artwork expands to that person looking at it.” - Sujak Rahman
